Looking for Swimming Books for your little swimmer?

We have you covered.

My son loves to swim. Since the moment he had his first bath, he has loved water. But finding books for your swimmer is a bit more difficult than finding books for someone who loves baseball or basketball.

These 10 books are great for children from preschool to first grade who are beginning to explore the joy of swimming.

#1. I Can Do A Back Float

July Featured Author Ashley Mills Monaghan has a swimming book, in addition to her music career and her other picture book “A Little Goes A Long Way”. This book is an instruction on how to do a back float. Tomorrow I will post a more detailed review on this book.

#2. Sergio Makes A Splash

Sergio loves the water but cannot swim. Then his class takes a field trip to learn how to swim. Sergio wears some very cute floats and a snorkel. A good book for a first time or reluctant swimmer.

#3. Froggy Learns To Swim

This book is awesome for swim instruction. There are specific swimming techniques in it to help kids learn how to swim. It’s also a good one for the reluctant swimmer. Froggy didn’t want to swim at first, but once his mother teaches him how, he doesn’t want to get out.

#4. Jabari Jumps

I posted a full review of this book on Monday. The art in this book is quite unique and the character is relatable for any child who has ever had anxiety about trying something new. This isn’t an “afraid of the water” book as much as a “you can do it” book.

#5. Hey Water

This isn’t necessarily a swimming book, but it’s great for a young water lover. There are many first words in this book that talk all about the many places we see water and the forms it takes. I wanted to add it to this list because familiarizing yourself with water itself is the first step to swimming. I highly recommend this book for toddlers as a first introduction to water.

#6. Swim Swim Sink

This silly story is not just a fun book for swimmers. It’s also a story about experimenting and trying again until you succeed. Little Duck can’t swim, but he finds a way to float next to his brothers. We did an activity this week to explore sinking and floating, that pairs well with this book. You can check out the activity here.

#7. Stewie The Duck Learns To Swim

This is one of the best books I’ve found on swim safety. It’s clear and simple. There is even a song at the end. The book emphasizes not getting into the water unless an adult is nearby and you have been taught how to swim. Great for first time swimmers or toddlers who need to learn very basic swimming safety.

#8. Pool

I’m growing quite fond of books with no words, especially when you have a child that does not read on their own yet. My four year old loves books where he can see the story happening without being read words. This particular one has beautiful pictures that tell the story of a shy swimmer. The pictures tell the story entirely on their own.

#9. 1,2,3 Jump

This cute book about a reluctant swimmer is a good read aloud before a swim class. It’s funny to watch as the little girl starts to get in the water, then changes her mind. The kids in her swim class go through basic swim techniques like floating, blowing bubbles, and going under the water.

#10. Dino-Swim

In our house, the only thing cooler than swimming is Dinosaurs. There are other books in this Dino-Sports series, but this particular one is about swimming, which is perfect for my little dinosaur lover.
