5 Covid-19 Books For Kids

Well my friends, our stay-at-home orders are reaching their end, but the Covid-19 pandemic is nowhere near over. While children may be resuming some of their daily activities, and many of us return to work, the threat of the virus is still very real, and hygiene is more important than ever. One great thing came from all this though. Tons of Covid-19 books!

Yes, my friends. When the world locked down, indie writers got to work, penning and illustrating their way through the confusion to send a message to our children. That they are not alone.

The impact of this virus on children has been greater than we can imagine. They were given the early summer they always wished for, but with no pools, no friends, no group activities, and a butt-load of homework. They’ve really been troopers, these kids. Having books that speak to them openly about these current events is essential to their emotional health during any world event like this one.

Here are my favorite COVID-19 books for kids.

Each of the following books will help your kids understand, learn, or just cope with the pandemic.

#1. What’s on Grandma’s Face By Jessica Lauramore

This cute little book tells the story of a grandmother who still comes to visit her granddaughter during the corona virus, but there’s something on her face. Grandma explains her mask as well as the changes to our lifestyle (school and park closures, etc) to her granddaughter. The book even comes with fun coloring pages at the back! It’s a bright positive outlook on the virus that will appeal to children without frightening them.

#2. How to Defeat the Icky, Filthy, Creepy, Slimy Corona Monster By Robert Definis

A fun rhyming story that paints the virus as an icky villain that kids can stop by following certain steps (washing hands, social distancing, covering your sneeze, etc). The approach of this book is very direct, and encourages children to keep safe health practices in order to ward off the bid mean monster that is Covid-19)

#3. What Is COVID-19? (Engaging Readers, Leveled Readers)

This is more of a non-fiction approach to teaching the children about the virus. Engaging readers has multiple levels of their Covid-19 book, designed to teach early readers of various skill levels about the virus in a no-nonsense way.

#4. Happy Harper Thursdays By Fern Shumer Chapman

Grandma and Harper used to have Happy Harper Thursdays, but now they don’t. Grandma explains why they can’t have Happy Harper Thursday right now. This one is especially good for younger children who really don’t understand why they can only talk to grandma and grandpa on the phone. It’s a reminder that their grandparent still loves them, even though they cannot be together.

#5. A Little Spot Stays Home By Diane Alber

The Author of the “Little Spot” series takes on the corona virus topic. The book falls well in with the brand that the author has set, helping children cope with the complicated time.

What do you think? What are some of your favorite Covid-19 books for kids? Did you like any of the books on this list? Please share in the comments any other great books for educating kids about the pandemic.
