Fairytale Play Dough Activity| Rapunzel’s Tower

It’s Fairytale Play Dough Time!

This month, in honor of Featured Author Katie Pye, we will be doing a weekly fairy tale themed play dough activity to celebrate all thing fairy tales!

Whether you are strictly original, or you love a good fractured fairytale, these fun activities will celebrate the stories and characters that we know and love. This week, our focus will be Rapunzel.

So without further ado…

Let’s Make Rapunzel’s Tower!

What you need:

Play Doh
You will need 4-5 different colors for this activity and just a few simple tools.

You will need at least four colors of play dough for this activity

A base color (we used a glittery pink), a hair color (we blended gold and yellow), and two stone colors (we used silver and tan)

I find glittery  Play Doh varieties work really well for the fairy tale stuff because, well, glitter.

A “hair making” tool

A plastic knife

A roller

Step One: The Base

Roll out your base dough and cut a square and a triangle from it.

Step 1: Create the base shapes for the tower and roof.

Step Two: The Stone Wall

Roll several balls of each of your stone colors and put them side by side in a pattern on your square base creating a 1:1 pattern. Be sure that you create a window. You can roll a long piece for the base of your window if you like. Once all your stones are in place, press down on them with your thump to flatten them this will create the stone wall look.

Step 2: Create the Stone Wall; Step 3: Add a roof

Step Three: The Roof

Place the triangle piece at the top of your tower to act as a roof. Roll a long piece of one of your stone colors to fill the space between the tower and the roof. Add a few stones to the top as a decorative border. You can also add a flag or draw a design on your roof with the knife.

Step Four: The Hair

Use the hair maker to make the hair. Separate the hair into three sections and carefully braid it. You can then add the hair to the tower to make it look as if it is coming out the window. You can add a bow or decorations if you like.

Step 4: Add Rapunzel’s Hair

Voila! Rapunzel’s Tower is complete!
