Children’s Books Written By Political Influencers

The notion of political influencers writing a book is nothing new, but lately politicians have began gearing their books toward a younger audience.

More and more political influencers are jumping on the children’s picture book band wagon. And why wouldn’t they? Writing a children’s picture book is the perfect way to seem relatable and relevant, as well as appeal to parents. There is also the added benefit of shaping young people into voters or maybe even young politicians.

Regardless of your political views, there is something for everyone on this list of 9 Children’s Books Written By Political Influencers

Of Thee I Sing By Barack Obama

I reviewed this book earlier in the week. You can see the book review here. I purchased it for my husband as a late father’s day gift, because of the message in it. It’s a letter from the former US President to his daughters, telling him that he sees in them the same potential, integrity, and innovation that so many Americans before them have shown.

It is not all sappy and heartwarming though. It’s actually very educational, and it introduces children to several diverse individuals who helped shape America. It’s by far my favorite on this list.

America: A Patriotic Primer By Lynne Cheney

I reviewed this one as well, and I have to say I was quite impressed. This book is a sort of patriotic alphabet. Each letter details a part of our country’s history and constitution. It’s a great book for children just beginning to learn US History.

Marlon Bundo’s A Day in the Life of the Vice President By Charlotte Pence

This famous bunny now has three books- four if you count the parody John Oliver and Last Week tonight wrote. In these books we get to see the world through the eyes of the Vice President’s family pet. While the verse is a bit strained and the book garnered some negative reviews and attention, the book is still a fun introduction to what the Vice President does.

My Senator and Me By Senator Edward M. Kennedy

Similar to Marlon Bundo, this book guides children through the eyes of a pet. This time, we get to see a day in the life of a senator thought he eyes of Ted Kennedy’s dog, Splash. It’s a fun way of teaching kids about how bills are passed.

It Takes a Village By Hillary Clinton

I absolutely love this book’s message about doing your part. Accompanied by beautiful illustrations, this gorgeous book carries a message about working together and the spirit of America. It’s also simply written and easy for children to understand.

She Persisted By Chelsea Clinton

Possibly the most popular book on this list, “She Persisted” got a lot of attention during the recent “Me Too” movement, and for good reason. This book tells the story of women who made a big difference in American Politics and never gave up. The book now has two sequels, “She Persisted Around The World” and “She Persisted In Sports”, and I’m certain there are many more to come.

Superheroes Are Everywhere By Kamala Harris

This is a somewhat personal book for Kamala Harris, telling a story of her growing up and learning from various heroes. It carries a message from children that heroes are everywhere and they too can be one.

Bold & Brave: Ten Heroes Who Won Women The Right to Vote By Kirsten Gillibrand

This book, penned by a US Senator, explores the Women’s Suffrage movement. It introduces children to heroes and figureheads that won women the right to vote.

Sisters First By Jenna Bush Hager and Barbara Pierce Bush

“Sisters First” stands out on the list as the only one that does not have a political or patriotic theme. This book, written by the former First Daughters, is a beautiful story of sisterhood and love. Ramona Kaulitzki’s illustrations make this book beautiful and it’s a great gift for your sister or even a little girl becoming a big sister.

Whatever the message or the intention, one thing is for sure.

Books by political figure heads are growing in popularity, and we can probably expect a growth in this trend, especially as the election nears.
