Book Activity| Pete The Cat Groovy Button Bracelets

My son and I recently discovered Pete the Cat, and he LOVES him!

Quite frankly, so do I.

Pete is a groovy cat who takes things as they come and always has a song in his heart. He’s pretty chill, even when things go wrong.

Our favorite Pete the Cat book is Pete the Cat and His Four Groovy Buttons, so for this weeks activity, we made Pete the Cat inspired Groovy Button Bracelets.

Here’s what you need:

Beads, buttons, Elastic String
All you need for this craft is elastic string, buttons, beads, and a pair of scissors

Elastic String

I got mine at the dollar store. Amazon has this stuff, but your local Dollar Tree or craft store might have a better deal.

Scissors

Beads

We used Blue and Yellow to match Pete and his Yellow Jacket. I have one of these big boxes of beads, because you never know what you’re going to need. (I think there may be some elastic string that comes in this one as well.)

4 Groovy Buttons

You can choose whichever buttons you like. We have a big bag like this of buttons, and I picked out some I thought looked most like Pete’s buttons.

Once you have everything, we can get started!

Step 1: Cut the string

I measured the string by wrapping it around our wrists, and I gave it a little extra on each side to tie it off.

Step 2: Start with a Button

I started with a button and brought it an inch or so on the string (leaving room for about 4 beads and a tie on the end I threaded through). I only threaded through two of the holes so that the button would lay flat.

Step 3: Add Some Beads

I did a pattern of blue, yellow, blue, yellow, in-between each button. Depending on the size of your wrist and your buttons, you may want to do less or more. The key is to do a pattern of some kid in between each button and keep it consistent. (This is also great practice with pattern recognition).

Step 5: Repeat. Add the buttons and beads until the bracelet is complete. Don’t forget to add beads in front of your first button.

Step 6: Tie it off

To finish your bracelet, make a snug knot and cut off any excess string. I put my son’s directly on to his wrist when I did this, to be sure it was measured just right and not too big.

Tie off your bracelet. Cut the excess strange.

Hooray! You Have a Groovy Button Bracelet!
