Kindness Rocks

Want to Spread some love and kindness today? Kindness Rocks can do that!

My son and I recently read the book Kindness Rocks by Sonica Ellis, which is available in paperback and on Kindle Unlimited. I highly recommend the book and the corresponding activity as a fun way to teach about random acts of kindness. It is also a fun way to open conversations about phrases and gestures we each consider kind.

“Kindness Rocks” is a story of a young girl who paints rocks with words of kindness and leaves them in her garden. All of the animals see them and look forward to her adding new ones. Then the girl has to move, and suddenly the animals have nothing to look forward to. Turtle finds his own solution to the problem and the animals learn that anyone can spread kindness.

I highly recommend this independent gem to anyone with kids 3-8. I also recommend creating some of your own.

A Book Based Activity

All you need are…

Some rocks

We picked some from our own garden. You can also buy rocks intended specifically for painting if you prefer that.

Some Paint

We used permanent acrylic paint, so the designs wouldn’t wash off so easily.

Some Brushes

I like to have a little of everything around, so we buy these.

This is a really straight forward activity. You just let your self go and paint rocks, really. You add messages to them that are kind or will brighten someone’s day.

Then, you leave the rocks in your garden, or on a neighbor’s porch, or in a park. Somewhere where the kindness can spread.

Here are the ones we painted.
