10 Awesome Dinosaur Books For Kids

Does your little one love dinosaur books?

Mine sure does. He LOVES dinosaurs. If it isn’t a robot, it’s a dinosaur. I’d say about 1/4 of the books on his shelf are about dinosaurs.

So if you are looking for a few great books for your budding paleontologist, I’ve got you covered.

Here are 10 of My Favorite Dinosaur Books

#1. Never Touch A Dinosaur

My son, for whatever reason, thinks this book is the FUNNIEST THING ON THE PLANET. I have never heard him laugh as hard reading any other book. He loves the idea of “you cannot touch this” and then touching it. I thought he would grow out of these books, but he’s four and he still loves them. There are several books in this series, but dinosaur is the favorite in our house.

#2. Dinosaur Pirates By Penny Dale

The only thing better than Pirates or Dinosaurs is Dinosaur Pirates. Lots of Aargg! Grrr! And more Aarrgg!  This book is very rhythmic and easy to memorize as well, making it a great early book for kids.

#3. 199 Dinosaurs & Prehistoric Animals

This is more of a directory of dinosaurs, but i’ve been surprised how often we use it. Anytime we see a dinosaur in another book or on TV that we do not recognize, we look it up in this book to find out its name. It’s very useful if your kids are super into learning the dinosaur names.

#4. Dinosaurs by Simms Taback

Several of the common first dinosaurs that kids learn are in this book, and it’s a great way for kids to learn them if they are just starting to learn about dinosaurs. There is a hidden flap element, where the pages fold out to reveal the name. It’s also a good one they can sit and look at on their own, even if they do not read yet.

#5. Dinosaurs Love Underpants

I do not understand why underpants are so funny, but apparently they are. This book rhymes and it’s full of dinosaurs wearing underpants of various styles and patterns. It is absolutely ridiculous, but it is a hit.

#6. Tiny T Rex and the Impossible Hug By Jonathan Stutzman

This book is cuteness overload. Tiny T.rex just wants to hug his friend. Problem is, tiny arms. This is a great book about not giving up and pushing until you succeed. It’s also a very kind book about helping a friend in need.

#7. Diggersaurs by Michael Whaite

This book is pure BOY. Construction vehicles plus dinosaurs equals very fun. Plus, there are lots of crunch!, crash!, aargh! sounds to make. My son quickly memorized which sounds go which which “diggersaur” and now makes the sounds, even when we are not reading the book.

#8. How do Dinosaurs Say I’m Mad By Jane Yolen

Yolen’s How Do Dinosaurs.. series is one of our all time favorites in our house. There is one for everything. This particular one is about anger management and it’s perfect for little boys who tend to stomp and roar like little dinosaurs when they are mad. Be sure to check out my post from Monday about “How do Dinosaurs Say I Love You”.

#9. Dinosaurs A to Z

This is another encyclopedia-like book, but with way more detail than the 199 Dinosaurs one. There are longer descriptions of the dinosaurs and they are all in alphabetical order. I like to use them together so we can learn as much as possible about each dinosaur. It’s very colorful and informative. I highly recommend this for kids who are really serious about learning their dinosaurs.

#10. I’m A Dirty Dinosaur

I love this book. The rhymes are cute, there is a lot of repetition, and there are even actions children can copy to get them moving. We did an activity this week based on this book. You can check it out here.

What did you think of the list?

Are there any dinosaur books you would add?

Let me know in the comments. I would love to hear from you.
