10 Fun Fractured Fairy Tales

Some stories are timeless, and others grow and change over time. They adapt to teach new lessons to new generations. Many fairy tales have found there place as forever readapted fractured fairy tales.

What is a Fractured Fairy Tale?

Well, it’s a fairy tale that you know and love, but not quite. A fractured fairytale can be anything from a funny version of the original tale to a twist that changes the lesson or moral. Fractured fairytales have become very popular. We find them in shows like ABC’s “Once Upon a Time”, broadway shows like “Wicked”, and teen book series such as Disney’s new “A Twisted Tale” collection.

But this is a kids book review blog, so today we’ll be talking about children’s picture books that feature these fun and unique adaptations of classic stories.

Here are my 10 Favorite Fractured Fairy Tales for Kids

Ready For Rescue

I mentioned this wonderful adaptation of Rapunzel when we talked about Rapunzel Retellings earlier in the month. This version of the story by Fairytale Fraud Author Katie Pye is funny and discourages procrastination.

You can read my full review of this book here.

The True Story of the Three Little Pigs

This is one of my all time favorites. As a kid, I loved this book and I’m happy to be sharing it with my own child now. This version of the story features a not so convincing wolf trying to convince us that he is simply a poor wolf with a cold, who just wants a cup of sugar.

Interstellar Cinderella

This is a fun take on Cinderella that twists the story a bit and takes away the need for a Prince. In this version, Cinderella repairs spaceships and she wants to go to the Prince’s Interstellar Ball because she thinks her skills as a mechanic would impress him. It’s rather different but incredibly refreshing.

It’s NOT Hansel and Gretel

Josh Funk’s version of the classic Hansel and Gretel tale will have you laughing out loud with its fun and unique style of storytelling and clever twists on the original.

Who’s Bad and Who’s Good Little Red Riding Hood?

Earlier in the month, I wrote a review of this adaptation of Little Red Riding Hood. This version very directly addresses the subject of stranger danger, and has a solid message about judging people by appearances. I was very pleasantly surprised overall by this book.

The Three Ninja Pigs

My son loves this one so much, I think he thinks it’s the real story and the original is a boring knock off. The rhyming text and fun ninja twist make this a great book for kids who do Karate or just love ninjas. The overall message of this version is that practice pays off and I love that it has martial arts terms.

After the Fall

What if they really could put Humpty Dumpty back together again? This sequel by Dan Santant is actually surprisingly deep for a children’s book. The story really touches on the idea of getting back up when you fall and has a beautiful surprise ending that almost choked me up. It’s a favorite in our house.

Goldilocks and the Three Dinosaurs

Mo Willems really knows what he’s doing. This silly comic style adaptation of the classic story has Goldilocks face to face, not with Bears but Dinosaurs. The whole book is funny from beginning to end and is an awesome take on the story if your kid loves dinousaurs.

Check out these other great dinosaur books if you have a dino lover!

The Ninja Bread Man

You just gotta love ninjas. In this version of The Gingerbread Man, our cookie friend is a cunning Ninja on the run. But can he outsmart Ninja Bear, Ninja Snake, Ninja Mouse, and Ninja Fox?

The Other Side of the Story

If you can’t get enough of fractured fairytales, this anthology has a bunch of them in one book. These well illustrated silly tales take a look at fairytales from a new perspective, usually through the villain’s eyes. Even I found a few of these pretty funny.
